Pink Landscape No 1

Due to improper storage and decades-long preservation beyond their expiration date, the chemical components of slide films begin to degrade. The emulsion layers start to break down, with cyan and magenta often remaining visible the longest. As a result, images retain less information. This method was used to photograph wounded landscapes, destroyed cultural monuments, and sites of war in Laos.

A central theme is the ambivalence between documentation and aestheticization in the depiction of conflict. Seemingly beautiful images can unconsciously lead to problematic representations. The work poses the question of whether images are truly capable of adequately conveying war, trauma, and devastated landscapes. The use of expired film material encourages reflection on how aesthetics influence the perception of destructive events.
